Another beautiful day in Tucson, Arizona. For the past 3 years, I’ve made it to Tucson to ride and get the necessary base miles before the start of the racing season. My coach, Susan Hefler from Hefler Performance Coaching, has me doing long 5 to 5.5 hour rides. Because I’m preparing for the Race Across America, this is exactly what I need…averaging about 80 miles a day. On Sunday, me and my riding partner, Mike Mekita, a longtime friend from New Jersey, really got hammered on a short 52 mile ride. The wind was blowing steady at 22mph with gusts to 35…that hurt. Today we’re going up Mount Lemon. Hopefully we’ll make it to Windy Point, 14 miles up the mountain. Since there was snow last week, that may not be possible, we’ll see. On Monday we saw Tom Danielson from Team Garmin going up the mountain. In one of the switchbacks, he was drilling it at what seemed to be 20 mph. Now I know why he came in 8th place in the 2011 Tour de France. WOW. Bike Safe – Gino
