Another account of the recent Rehearsal Ride
Saturday, Team GBF took on Skyline Drive for 102 miles and 10,500 ft of climbing. Our coach Sue Hefler said, “you need to start logging the volume/ miles. I would seriously say okay, for the next 2 mos it is BIKE bike bike.” That’s exactly what we’re doing. The day could not have been better – 60’s up to about 70 – light wind and great views. A mix-up separated Dave Viens from us at mile 5 or so from the Front Royal entrance – he thought we were ahead of him (we weren’t) – we thought he was behind us (he wasn’t). Dave powered on alone for 45 miles where we caught up with him at Big Meadows. It was A LOT of CLIMBING (~7000 ft) to get to mile 50. We were more than ready for a Lunch break. Our pace on the return was much quicker (with more downhill – though there was still ~3500 ft of climbing, especially over the return over Hogsback Mt). We we’re so pumped at the finish that we agreed to do it again next Sunday. Riding in Virginia doesn’t get better than this! 6 weeks and counting to RAAM.
